Peach Morning

This scene was inspired by a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the big island of Hawaii. The gnarled and rugged trees in this picture are called Ohia Lehua and bear pompom-like blossoms commonly know as "the rain flower," The blossoms come in three colors, hot pink, fluorescent orange and bright red (although I've never seen more than one color on a single tree). The trees are indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands and are a common source of nectar to the dwindling population of endangered Hawaiian birds known as Hawaiian honeycreepers. The trees have tough leathery leaves and are extremely hardy. For me, the scene evokes the peaceful stillness of a misty morning in the mysterious realm of Hawaii's volcanoes. On a serene morning like this it is difficult to imagine the enormously powerful forces that are at work just below the surface of this living volcano.
