The Stone Lantern
On a visit to Foster Gardens, I came across a large volcanic rock covered with little yellow "popcorn" orchids. That inspired this garden scene, complete with a Japanese stone lantern. If God allows me to live long enough, someday I'd like to paint this scene again in a twilight setting with candles burning inside the stone lantern. As you have probably already realized, by noting the size of some of my other paintings, I love to paint really big canvases. This one is huge. It took about seven months to complete. But I feel it was worth it to capture the peaceful tranquillity of this setting. With the 6-inch wide picture frame shown, it fills a wall nearly from floor to ceiling. It is like a huge picture window that opens out into a garden in perpetual bloom. There is a green gecko hiding in plain view - as in real life, he's not really hiding at all but blends in so well that most people have to search to find him.
