Mokolii Island
Mokolii Island is located on the Northeast side of Oahu near the town of Kaaawa. The scene in my painting is actually viewed from a hiking trail known as the Haiku Stairs. The stairs lead up the incredibly steep windward face of the Ko'olau mountain range. The view in the scene faces northeast. In the foreground, Plumeria trees perfume the air with hundreds of fragrant pink Plumeria blossoms. Along the horizon lie the mountains near the town of Kaaawa. Just offshore is Mokolii Island.
When I chose this scene for the painting, I didn't realize that Mokolii Island would end up very near the center of the painting. I just wanted to paint the spectacular view. But after completing the painting, I found it pleasantly amusing that one of the tiniest elements in the painting ended up being a strong focal point (something I have rarely seen in paintings), so I decided to name it for that tiny little island that always catches my eye when I look at the painting.
